Since November 2019, we have also started using the HighScope methodology with our preschoolers and Kindergarten.

The HighScope method of learning is an educational approach that emphasizes active, hands-on learning where children are encouraged to explore, experiment, and engage with their environment to develop their cognitive, social, and physical skills. This method is rooted in the idea that children learn best by doing. It is structured around a daily routine that includes plan-do-review cycles, allowing children to make choices about what they want to do, carry out those plans, and then reflect on what they’ve accomplished. This process encourages critical thinking, decision-making, and problem-solving abilities, making learning meaningful and engaging for young children.

In the HighScope approach, teachers play a facilitative role, guiding children through their self-directed activities and providing support as needed. The curriculum is aligned with key developmental indicators (KDIs) that outline goals in areas such as language, math, social-emotional development, and creativity. Assessment is continuous and observational, ensuring that each child’s progress is monitored in a natural and supportive manner. The HighScope method fosters a sense of autonomy and confidence in children, preparing them for lifelong learning by promoting an active and collaborative learning environment.
